Game Mods

Post by CardboardLuigi on Wed 30 Aug 2017, 9:05 pm

I don't know what to put here.
Just a general topic about game mods, may they add something, replace something, whatever goes into romhacks or addons, etc.

Re: Game Mods

I don't know a lot about modding games. I know my older cousins had their old systems modded so that they could somehow burn games onto empty discs. I'm not really familiar with all the technical stuff behind how it was done or works. Of course their systems also bricked. So they were kind of playing with fire. Have you modded or downloaded mods for your games? I know quite a bit of gamers do this, but I never tried it myself. Knowing my luck, I would probably end up ruining my game or system.

Good to see that you were able to make it over to the forum! Hopefully this place can be a safe retreat for most if not all of our pals.

I always thought game mods are made so that players can mess around, but nothing else. YouTube is filled with many examples, especially game channels. Maybe there using this as an advantage when they run out of ideas for making videos. This plan B works well xD

Oh, I've seen a few of those on YouTube and other channels. I never really delved deeper into it or tried to learn more about it. I remember that it was necessary to mod the Fallout series, and preferably on the PC, because they shoved the game out before it was ready to be on shelves. So it was riffed with glitches that made certain quests and locations impossible to complete or proceed with.

I actually like the Fallout series, but unfortunately the bugs and terrible loading speed ruin the mood often lol. And yes, this plan B is quite adequate, if I do say so myself. The forum probably will need fixing and redesigning, but I'll cross that bridge whenever.

I mostly just use mods in a few PC games, but I also use 'em in Brawl.
I've also played a few rom hacks.

Oh nice! I know that Brawl and other games have mods, but do you have to do anything special to your system and or game to use these mods? It'd be really fun to mess around in Brawl on a rainy or really slow and boring day.

For the PC games I use, all you need is a Steam account and the games.
For Brawl, you need to use an exploit called "Smash Stack," which involves deleting all of the custom stages, putting a patch file in a certain folder, and then having some sort of boot.elf file, all in a SD card. This is a method of installing the Homebrew Channel even on the Wii U.
This is also a hackless method, but you will have to do it every time you have the SD Card in your console. Because otherwise it crashes the game.
For Wii U games, it's much more complicated. If you had the console while the firmware was version 5.5.1, you need to not update it to the current 5.5.2 (although I've heard there's an exploit involving Crunchyroll for this version), have some sort of thing telling the game what custom files to use (at least for Smash 4, haven't tried this with MK8), and with the right folder structure, boot up the game you wanted to use mods for, then boot up the Internet Browser and go to the website loadiine.ovh, select some program that I forget what the name was, wait until it resets, and boot up your game.
It's the second thing in that Wii U ramble that made me give up on trying to add mods to Smash 4, because there are no guides on how to make 'em, and they're only available for download in character packs, and I don't want those skins I'll never use, I just want to play as Phoenix Wright.
For rom hacks, you just need an emulator, and if the hack download isn't in the form of a rom, the original game's rom and a patcher.

Edit: Turns out that they updated loadiine.ovh so that it's compatible with 5.5.2.
I wish there was a guide on how to make that Smash 4 file thingy.

That's actually pretty cool. My Wii really doesn't get a lot of us anymore, especially since the WiiU can play the original Wii games...at least I think it can. When I find some more free time, I might just go and try all sorts of silly things for Brawl.

I happened to come across this when I google Smash Brawl mods.

That would actually make for a pretty good smash attack. Except Wess and Duster would totally have to be in it.

I make mods myself, mostly L4D2 survivors.
At least five of them ended up in Youtube videos.

That's pretty cool Drew! Are any of your mods in the videos you posted?

Yup.
It's especially apparent with the Shantae one.
As for the Spongebob one, it's only the Spongebob, Squidward, Patrick and Sally Acorn survivors.

Pretty cool! I watched the Spongebob video first, so I assumed your mod might had been the zombie krabby patties. It seemed like a mod you would had made.

They're all so random and out of place that it makes them funny/cool.

I wish I could mod the game Haydee, but I don't have 3D Max.
Such a shame too. With a game with so much fanservice, I want to subvert the hell out of it and put in Dr. Eggman.

Oh cool, I didn't know you had to go as far as using 3D software for the mods. I just assumed there was some kind of packet online that you downloaded to mess around with. I don't have 3D Max either, but I do have Maya. I wonder if I'd be able to use that for mods...
